Why the phrase misleads careful people
Search for digital assets and “dead man’s switch,” and you will find dramatic pictures: a timer, a missed signal, an instant dump of secrets. The metaphor is memorable. As a product description for digital legacy, it is usually wrong.
What most people actually need is not theater. They need a release protocol: defined materials, named people, a reliable signal of prolonged non-response, and deliberate confirmation before anything sensitive is released.

Email life-check (what MemoryShield runs)
Scheduled email check-ins on a cadence you configure. If you confirm, the protocol stays idle. If check-ins are missed according to your settings, the system begins verification—not instant publication of the vault.
Life-check is email-only. Login SMS two-factor authentication, if you enable it for account sign-in, is a separate control. It is not the life-check.
“Dead man’s switch” (popular shorthand)
Often imagined as an instant, irreversible trigger. Useful as a metaphor for “something happens if I stop responding.” Misleading if it implies no verification, SMS life-check, or automatic inheritance of every credential.
Password manager emergency access

Myth 1: Missed signal equals instant dump
Myth: The switch fires and secrets appear everywhere.
Reality for a release protocol: Missed life-checks start a multi-step path. Depending on configuration, that can include an extended monitoring period, backup-contact notification, and a waiting period. Only after the active steps complete are vault items released to verified trustees.

Myth: Set a switch once; digital legacy is solved.
Reality: Digital legacy needs packets, people, signal, and verification. A timer without named trustees and accepted roles leaves survivors improvising. A timer without a vault leaves them with a signal and nothing useful to receive. A timer without maintenance goes stale when accounts and relationships change.

- If check-ins are missed, multi-step verification runs (monitoring, backup contacts, waiting period as configured).
- After verification completes, designated vault items are released to verified trustees.
- Is the signal automated, or does someone have to start a request?
- Is life-check clearly email (or something else)—and is that documented?
- What verification runs before release?
- Who receives materials—named, accepted trustees, or whoever guesses first?
- What exactly is released—prepared packets, or an unbounded credential dump?
- Does the product claim to certify death or replace a will? (It should not.)

Myth 3: SMS is “more serious” than email for life-check
Myth: A proper dead man’s switch must ping by SMS.
Reality: MemoryShield’s life-check is email-only by product design. SMS may appear in account security (for example login 2FA) without being the life-check mechanism. Conflating the two creates false expectations about how release starts.
Evaluate the full path: signal → verification → release to trustees. Channel branding does not replace that path.
Myth 4: A will or an envelope is the switch
Myth: Legal paperwork or a sealed note will “activate” access when needed.
Reality: A will is a legal instrument. It can name an executor and express wishes. It does not run check-ins, store encrypted release packets securely for automated delivery, or verify trustees through a configured product flow. Static envelopes go stale and are easy to lose or open at the wrong time.
Will and release protocol address different layers. Neither substitutes for the other. MemoryShield belongs on the operational layer; it does not replace estate-planning counsel.
Myth 5: Sharing one master password is a human switch
Myth: Tell one person everything; they will “switch on” when the time comes.
Reality: Single-person knowledge creates ongoing insider risk while you are alive and a single point of failure if that person is unavailable, conflicted, or overwhelmed. Named trustees inside a protocol can be planned with roles and timing—without giving standing vault access today.
