Your face, your voice, their name
Years from now, your children may want to see your face and hear you say their name. A short video can hold things a letter can't: the way you laugh, the way you pause before saying something important, your hands, your kitchen.
You don't need a studio, a script or a special camera. This guide covers what to say, how to make it feel natural, and how to keep the video safe with the people you choose.
Before you press record
- Pick a quiet, familiar place. Your own couch or kitchen table is better than a perfect background.
- Use light from a window in front of you, not behind you.
- Keep it short. Several short videos are easier to record than one long one.
- Don't aim for perfect. Stumbles and laughs are part of you. Leave them in.
What to say: prompts that work
You can talk to all your children together or record one video per child.
- Start with their name and something you love about them right now.
- Tell a story they might be too young to remember: the day they were born, their first word, a holiday that went wrong in a funny way.
- Talk about your own childhood. Where you grew up, who raised you, what you were like at their age.
- Share what you've learned. Something about friendship, work, kindness, or getting through hard times.
- Say what you hope for them. Not what they should become; how you hope they'll feel.
- End simply. "I love you" is enough.
Things to avoid
- Instructions about money or legal matters. Those belong with your will and your lawyer.
- Anything that might frighten a young child. Speak to the person they'll be when they watch it.
- Promises about when they'll watch it. Whoever receives it can choose that moment with care.
Recording a video for your children in MemoryShield
In MemoryShield, video is an item in your vault, alongside your letters and photos. You can record a video in your browser or upload one you've already made on your phone.
Then you choose the named trustee who should receive it. That might be your partner, a sibling, or a close friend who will be there for your children.
Your trustee can't see anything while you're answering your email check-ins. If you ever stop answering, the release process starts.
Here is what happens if you stop answering your email check-ins. Nothing is released because of one missed email. First there's extended monitoring: more check-ins, more time. Then your backup contact is notified; they can't see your vault. Then there's a waiting period. Only after all of that do your verified trustees receive the items you designated for them. MemoryShield doesn't certify death and has no death-certificate, legal or medical review step. Full walkthrough: How an email life-check and verification work before vault release.
After release, your trustees can download the video and keep it, and share it with your children when they feel the time is right. MemoryShield doesn't schedule videos for birthdays or milestones; that judgment stays with a person you trust.
A quiet note on security: your vault is encrypted at rest (AES-256), with escrowed keys so release can work after verification; not zero-knowledge. Item-level encryption is opt-in: you can turn it on for an item, and it's off unless you do. MemoryShield isn't a password manager or a will, and it can't open anyone's other accounts. How security works.
A gentle plan for this month
- Week 1: Write down three stories you'd want to tell.
- Week 2: Record one short video. Watch it once, then leave it alone.
- Week 3: Name a trustee and tell them it exists.
- Week 4: Turn on your email check-in and add a backup contact.
Questions
Can I re-record? Yes. Replace a video whenever you like, or keep several.
Should I also write a letter? Many people do both. A letter lets you say things you might not manage on camera. See What to store in a legacy vault.
Is this a will? No. It's a personal message, not a legal document. Education only, not legal advice.
